G and I went to the city park today. The City had just mulched the playground so G was having a blast swinging and kicking the dirt. We had only been there about 15 minutes when 2 city trucks pulled up. One guy got out and explained to me that they had a little more work to do on the mulch and if we could come back in about 10 minutes. Yeah. Right. YOU tell a 2 year old that.
G did not go quietly and all the guys looked on with great sympathy. I carried him down the sidewalk so that we were out of sight of the playground and sat him down. I told him (for the 3rd time) what was going on and that we were going to look at the ducks then go back to the swings. Well, he perked up when he heard that.
The park has a cute little pond that you can actually fish in but the main attraction is the duck population -- about 10 who live there year-round. I pointed to a bench just by the water and G took off for it. Within seconds of us sitting down, a big white duck started paddling over to us. I kept telling G that we had to be quiet so we didn't scare him off. Before I knew it, this darn duck is pecking at my shoes and grabbing my pantlegs with its beak! G was a little alarmed until I told him the duck thought we had food and that was his way of asking. Soon, G was giggling so hard his nose was running (it was anyway but that seemed to help it along). Pretty soon, 2 more ducks came over to us, quacking and pecking at my feet. They were close enough that G was actually able to pet one. According to him, the ducks have "feffers".
G finally felt safe enough to get off the bench -- he had been standing on it -- and check these things out. I'm not sure he expected them to be as tall as he is! However, he got a kick out of them pecking at his shoes until...
...one got a hold of his pantleg. And wouldn't let go.
I scooped up my crying child and started back towards the swings. I tried to console him and say that the ducks couldn't hurt him and remarked about how funny they were. Soon, he was laughing again. Whew. I asked him if he liked the ducks. He thought about it and said, "Yep! Ducks funny."
